Steps, carry groceries, stand up from a chair or work an afternoon in the garden. You use your muscles in a lot of movements that seem self-evident.
Ageing can reduce muscle strength. Targeted strength training can help maintain and build strength. That's why we're at Aurora looking at what you want to do in everyday life.
For example, we are working on:
Your goals determine where we put the emphasis. Perhaps you'd like to move more easily during daily activities. Maybe you just want to keep walking, cycling or sports.
You can start with Aurora without experience in strength training. Even if you haven't been working out for a long time or doubting what your body can handle, we will take the time to discuss a suitable start.
One starts with getting up from a bench. Another already trains with weights and wants to build further. Both can be a good implementation of strength training.
Your trainer looks at your possibilities, explains the exercises and helps you learn the movements. In doing so, we take into account your experience, health and recovery.

During the free consultation we discuss what you want to achieve, how much you currently move and what you run into.
We also ask about any complaints, previous injuries and relevant advice from a doctor or physiotherapist. So we get a picture of the focus points for your training.
During your training, your trainer will explain what you're going to do and why. We look along with your performance and adjust exercises, resistance and rest moments where necessary.
You get the space to ask questions and to indicate how an exercise feels.
When you master an exercise well and recover enough, we can make this step by step more challenging. For example, with more repetitions, a slightly heavier weight or a larger movement result.
We follow your progress in training and discuss what you notice in daily activities.
Roel van den Bogaard is personal trainer and coach at Aurora. His approach is sober and personal, paying attention to a training routine that fits your life.
Strength training for seniors can consist of different exercises. The choice depends on your goals and possibilities.
| Example of an exercise | What we're working on |
|---|---|
| Checked up from a bench | Leg strength and control when sitting and standing |
| On low elevation steps | Power and control for taking a step |
| Carrying an appropriate weight | Grip power and carrying objects |
| Balance exercises with support where necessary | Stability and control of your attitude |
These are examples. You get a program that matches your situation, with adjustments when a movement is still too difficult or can offer more challenge.
Still, I thought the step to start was quite a threshold. But... wonder over wonder: I'm even starting to like it!

At Aurora you train by appointment in a small-scale private studio. Your trainer guides you in your exercises, so you know what you do and what you can watch out for.
The studio offers:
You'll find us at the Vestdijk 159 in central Eindhoven.
The Dutch movement guidelines advise adults and older people to muscle and bone strengthening activities at least twice a week to do so. For the elderly, these are supplemented by balancing exercises. In addition, the guidelines advise to move moderately intensively for at least 150 minutes a week and to sit still for less time.
How you build this depends on your baseline, health and recovery.
During the consultation we discuss which training frequency suits you and how you can combine the training with movement outside the studio. Also with a modest start you can work on a regular routine.

At an older age too, strength training can help to improve muscle strength and function. Your age alone doesn't determine which exercises are appropriate. We're looking at your health, your experience and what you can handle at that moment.
No. You can start at your current level. We adjust the exercises, resistance and resting moments accordingly and gradually continue to build.
Yes. Hiking and cycling are valuable forms of movement. Strength training adds targeted resistance that allows you to train different muscle groups. For the elderly, balancing exercises are also relevant.
That depends on your situation. Discuss complaints and existing diagnoses during intake. In case of new or unexplained pain, a recent surgery or uncertainty about medical limitations, it is advisable to first agree with your doctor or physiotherapist as appropriate.
We can take their advice into account. Personal training does not replace medical treatment or physical therapy.
Yes, Aurora also offers duo personal training. During the introduction we discuss whether training is compatible with your goals and possibilities.
For example, we look at your performance, the resistance you can handle and the number of repeats. In addition, we discuss how daily activities are carried out. What you notice and how fast that goes, differs per person.
