Acai Bowl Recipe with Banana and Berries

By Roel van den Bogaard, personal trainer and founder of Aurora Personal Training in Eindhoven.

Make an acai bowl by blending frozen acai pulp with frozen banana, berries, milk, honey and vanilla protein powder. Divide the thick mixture between two bowls and add fruit and coconut flakes. With the fruit already frozen, this recipe takes approximately 5 minutes to prepare.

An acai bowl is eaten with a spoon, so the base should be thicker than a drinkable smoothie. Frozen ingredients and a limited amount of liquid help create that texture.

Below, you will find the recipe first, followed by blending tips, topping ideas and variations.

Açai Bowl: Een krachtige superfood voor energie en herstel

Instructions

  1. Prepare the fruit. Use a banana that was peeled and cut into pieces before freezing. Prepare the toppings so you can serve the bowls immediately after blending.
  2. Fill the blender. Add the acai pulp or powder, frozen banana, berries, protein powder, milk and honey. Follow your blender manufacturer’s recommended loading order.
  3. Blend until thick and smooth. Blend into a creamy mixture without large pieces. If necessary, stop the blender and scrape down the sides. Never put a spatula into a running blender.
  4. Check the consistency. The mixture should be thick enough to eat with a spoon. Only add a small amount of extra liquid if the blender cannot otherwise mix it properly; this is an adjustment to the original 100 ml.
  5. Divide between two bowls. Spoon the mixture into the bowls.
  6. Add the toppings. Finish with kiwi, banana, berries and coconut flakes. Add optional granola and almond butter, then serve immediately.

What is an acai bowl?

An acai bowl is a thick smoothie made with açaí, served in a bowl with toppings. You will see the name written both as “acai” and “açaí”.

The base is often combined with frozen fruit. This recipe uses banana and blueberries or strawberries, alongside milk and vanilla protein powder.

The main difference from an ordinary smoothie is the consistency and serving style: you eat a bowl with a spoon.

Acai pulp or powder: which should you use?

The original recipe offers a choice between 100 g frozen pulp and two tablespoons of powder. They do not automatically produce the same result.

Frozen acai pulp Acai powder
Adds moisture and frozen volume Does not add frozen volume
Helps keep the base cold The other frozen fruit provides most of the cold texture
Composition varies between products Concentration and composition vary between brands

Check the label: products can differ in added sugar and other ingredients.

Using powder? Expect the thickness and flavour to differ from a version made with frozen pulp. Keep the original quantities as your starting point.

How to make a thick acai bowl

Use frozen fruit

Thawed banana and berries produce a thinner base. Take the ingredients out of the freezer when you are ready to begin.

Cut the banana into pieces before freezing to make blending easier.

Avoid adding extra milk too quickly

This recipe uses 100 ml for the whole batch. More liquid can make blending easier, but it can also turn the bowl into a drinkable smoothie.

If the mixture stops circulating, switch off the blender, loosen the contents and follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Not every blender handles very thick mixtures equally well.

Prepare the toppings first

The mixture softens as it stands. Slice the fresh fruit before you start blending.

Add granola just before eating so it stays crunchy.

Which toppings work well on an acai bowl?

The original combination includes kiwi, banana, berries and coconut flakes, providing different textures.

Granola adds crunch. Almond butter adds a nutty flavour.

You do not need large amounts of every topping. The quantities affect the flavour, portion size and nutritional values of the finished bowl.

Is an acai bowl healthy?

An acai bowl can fit into a varied eating pattern. The complete recipe and portion size matter more than the word “acai”.

Fruit, milk, protein powder and toppings provide different nutrients. That does not automatically make this bowl better than every other breakfast.

Is acai a superfood?

“Superfood” is not an official nutritional category. The label does not establish that a product provides exceptional health benefits.

We therefore do not promise that this recipe boosts immunity, reduces inflammation or speeds up muscle recovery. A varied eating pattern matters more than one particular berry. [1]

Is this bowl sugar-free?

No. The recipe contains honey and naturally occurring sugars from ingredients including fruit and milk. Acai products, protein powder and granola may also contain added sugar.

The recipe does not guarantee energy without a dip or stable blood sugar.

Is an acai bowl suitable for weight loss?

It can be, provided the portion fits your overall eating pattern. A bowl containing fruit is not automatically low in calories.

Granola, almond butter and other toppings can make a substantial difference. Consider the entire bowl rather than only the base.

How much protein and how many calories does this bowl contain?

Milk and protein powder contribute protein. The exact nutritional values depend on the products and topping quantities.

Remember that:

  • A scoop of protein powder varies in weight between brands.
  • Almond and oat drinks do not automatically provide as much protein as milk.
  • Acai pulp and powder can have different compositions.
  • The quantities above make two portions.

To calculate values per serving, first add up all the ingredients and toppings used. Divide by two if you make equal portions.

Can you eat an acai bowl after strength training?

Yes. This bowl combines carbohydrates with protein from milk and protein powder.

That does not automatically make it a complete recovery meal for everyone. Your needs depend on your training, overall nutrition and goals.

Variations and dietary requirements

With a plant-based drink

Almond and oat drinks are original alternatives to whole milk. They change the flavour and nutritional values.

For a lactose-free version, check the protein powder too. Replacing the milk alone may not be enough.

Vegan acai bowl

The basic recipe is not vegan because of the honey and potentially the milk and protein powder.

For a vegan version, replace all relevant ingredients and check the toppings. This changes the recipe above.

Gluten-free toppings

Choose granola labelled gluten-free if needed. Also check the protein powder and other products.

Preparing for a busy morning

Make preparation easier by peeling, slicing and freezing the banana in advance. Keep the required acai and berries ready, and measure out the protein powder.

Blend when you are ready to eat to preserve the cold, thick consistency.

Taking the bowl with you? Keep the base chilled and transport the toppings separately. Granola loses its crunch when left in the mixture.

Frequently asked questions about making acai bowls

Can you make an acai bowl without acai?

You can make a smoothie bowl with banana and berries. Without acai, however, it is a different smoothie bowl with a different flavour and composition.

Can you use fresh banana?

Yes, as a variation, but the base will be less cold and usually thinner. The original recipe uses frozen banana.

Why is my acai bowl too runny?

Possible causes include too much liquid, thawed fruit or using powder instead of frozen pulp. Follow the original quantities and add extra liquid cautiously.

Can you leave out the protein powder?

That changes the flavour, thickness and nutritional values. The recipe above includes one scoop of vanilla protein powder.

How many servings does this recipe make?

Two. Divide both the base and toppings between two bowls. Whether that makes a suitable breakfast for you depends on your needs.

Can you make an acai bowl in advance?

For the best texture, blend just before eating. You can prepare the frozen ingredients and measure the dry ingredients ahead.

Which allergens does this recipe contain?

The whole-milk version contains milk. Protein powder may also contain milk and other allergens. Almond drink and almond butter contain almonds, while granola may contain gluten and nuts. Check all ingredient labels.
